Poker is written down in history as one of the
most popular card games ever. Little is known that 5 draw poker
was invented as early as the cave days - where our ape-like forefathers,
bored out of their minds sat down and invented the 54 cards -
of course they didn't have paper of thin plastic at that time
- so they used to paint the cards on the cave walls and play
the game of 5 draw poker. According to historians, the cave people
soon stopped playing - mostly because it took them forever to
complete the game since they had to paint
poker every time they got
new cards (which they had to invent), and the main problem was
they could peep into the cards of the poker players . They evolved
a few years later to playing with thin rocks - but that proved
to be very uncomfortable as well. It was only when the highly
intelligent Egyptians invented the use of the papyrus leaves
as means of writing. The Egyptians had their own set of symbols
to the cards, but it was basically still the same game.
"5 draw poker, as we know it, came to life with
King Henry VIII, which was known to have a liking to card games.
He heard about the 5 draw poker game when the Sultan of Turkey
brought him a pack of old papyrus cards".(Poker legends, Bultton B. p.24)
